County Road 5 Bridge and Widening Project

Project Overview

The Town of Timnath is designing roadway improvements for CR-5 between Weitzel Street and Deer Park Avenue. The project will include widening of CR-5 from Weitzel Street to Harmony Road including replacement or widening of the existing bridge over the Cache La Poudre River. The project also involves evaluating different alternatives for how the floodplain, roadway and existing bridge interact with one another. CR-5 is a critical north-south arterial connecting neighborhoods to Old Town and providing access to I-25 and Fort Collins via Prospect Road, Mulberry Street (CO 14), Harmony Road and Kechter Road.

In support of the goals established with the Town’s Transportation Master Plan (2024), the CR-5 Improvements project will:

  • Enhance safety
  • Improve traffic flow
  • Provide multimodal connectivity as the Town and Northern Colorado region continue to grow

CR-5 Roadway Improvements

CR-5 Bridge

The existing CR-5 bridge over Cache La Poudre River was constructed in 1997 as a two-lane structure. The current average traffic is 7,600 vehicles per day and is projected to increase to 18,500 by 2045. Widening the bridge structure or possibly replacing the bridge will be needed to accommodate the additional traffic demand. Furthermore, portions of the CR-5 roadway are currently within the floodplain and can experience overtopping during major storm events. Upgrades to the bridge and construction of a more resilient CR-5 will ensure that the structure and roadway remains intact during future floods.

Harmony Road Improvements

Intersection improvements are being evaluated as a part of the CR 5 widening.  The goal for the intersection is to improve safety for motorists, bikes and pedestrians.  With the projected increase in traffic volumes on both CR-5 and Harmony Road, the Town is currently evaluating the need for additional turn lanes.
