Mayor Axmacher Shares Update on Ongoing Conversations with Poudre School District

Mayor Robert Axmacher is sharing the following message with the community regarding Timnath Elementary School and the ongoing conversation with Poudre School District:

“Dear President Zamora and Board Directors,

As many of you witnessed firsthand this week, Timnath Elementary is aged but has never been more vibrant. To stop this school’s heartbeat without first exploring all viable remedies would be a failure of conscience by all involved.

Timnath as a town, but more importantly, Timnath as a community, is fully committed to partnering with the Poudre School District to identify and implement a lasting alternative to permanent closure.

On October 13th, Timnath Town Council adopted Resolution No. 61 Expressing Support for the Continued Operation of Timnath Elementary School. The resolution invites PSD to collaborate with the town to explore and adopt a solution that both allows Timnath students to attend school in Timnath and addresses the district’s enrollment, facility, and long-term planning needs.

I write to you today, on behalf of my fellow council members, to reaffirm and make concrete our commitment to this process.

Provided the school board votes to pause the proposed Timnath Elementary closure for at least one year, we will immediately partner with you to stand up a task force comprised of town, district, parent, and community representatives. The task force will be charged with identifying viable alternatives to permanent closure of the school and a clear strategy for timely implementation.

In direct support of this joint effort, the town will provide funding to retain an independent consultant to manage the process and to help research and evaluate current and potential future funding mechanisms. Timnath Town Council will direct town staff to set aside these funds at our budget work session scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th at 5pm.

I appreciate the challenge and gravity of the matter before you. Thank you for genuinely listening to those impacted by the proposed closures and for your thoughtful deliberation. Together, there is a path forward.
