In the last few years, golf carts have gained popularity for short-distance driving. In many Timnath neighborhoods, it’s common to travel from your house to the clubhouse by golf cart, or even to another neighbor’s home. In response to this trend, the Town established regulations for what is and isn’t allowed when driving golf carts on public streets.
To help keep our community safe, please review these new guidelines before cruising around the Town in your golf cart.
Follow the rules of the road
In general, golf carts may not travel above 20 miles per hour on any road. When driving your golf cart through Town, make sure to follow all other rules of the road. If you are turning, use turn signals or visible hand signals to indicate your intentions. Drive on the right side of the road, as if you were driving your car, and obey all traffic signs within the neighborhood.
Where you can drive your golf cart
Golf carts are only permitted on public streets with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less, which includes most neighborhood roads. Golf carts are not allowed on roads with speed limits of 40 miles per hour or greater, such as Harmony Road, Latham Parkway, Three Bell Parkway, Buss Grove Road (County Road 40), River Pass Road and Mulberry Street.
If you are traveling across Town in your golf cart, you are allowed to cross a street with a higher speed limit above 35-miles per hour at a stoplight-controlled intersection. Remember to always obey traffic laws when you use these intersections and follow the same rules of the road that you would if driving a car.
Golf carts may not be driven on sidewalks unless the sidewalk is part of a golf course or posted signs clearly allow the use of golf carts.
Important safety considerations
When driving a golf cart, only carry the number of passengers recommended by the golf cart manufacturer. Further, if you are traveling at, or above, 20 miles per hour, make sure your golf cart has seatbelts so everyone can buckle up.
Safety equipment is required for any golf cart operating between sunset and sunrise. If you are driving your golf cart when it’s dark, make sure that your golf cart has headlamps, tail lamps, stop lamps, turn signals, a horn, rearview mirror and front windshield. These safety features will keep you safe on the roads.
Have a license and insurance
You must have a valid driver’s license to drive a golf cart on the streets in Timnath. This means no one under the age of 16 may drive your golf cart. Your golf cart must also be covered by up-to-date liability insurance when operating on any Town road.
